Kids’ Cough & Cold Video Visits in Utah

Utah kids catch several colds every school year, and fall and winter bring RSV and flu too. Most coughs and colds get better with rest and fluids. A video visit helps you tell a normal cold from something that needs a closer look.

When to go in person or call 911

  • Fast breathing, ribs or belly pulling in with each breath, nostrils flaring, or grunting
  • Blue or gray lips, or struggling to breathe: call 911
  • A barky cough with a high-pitched noise when breathing in at rest
  • Fever in a baby under 3 months, or a fever that returns after your child started getting better
  • Signs of dehydration, or a cough lasting more than 3–4 weeks

What's normal

  • A runny or stuffy nose for 7–10 days, sometimes with green or yellow mucus
  • A cough that lingers 2–3 weeks after the cold while the airways heal
  • Low energy and a smaller appetite for a few days

What helps at home

  • Plenty of fluids and rest
  • A cool-mist humidifier, especially in Utah's dry winter air
  • Saline drops or spray and gentle suction for stuffy noses
  • A spoonful of honey for coughs in kids over 1 year (never give honey to babies under 1)

How a video visit can help

  • Watch your child breathe on camera and check for signs of working hard to breathe
  • Listen to the cough and review fever, sleep, eating, and drinking
  • Make a clear plan for home care, or for when an in-person exam or test makes sense
